The Current Threat
A West Virginia corporation, Dominion Transmission Inc. (DTI), is planning on building an 11-acre
industrial facility between Rt. 340, Rt. 180 and Gene Hemp Rd. on the edge of Jefferson, MD. This
industrial facility is part of a huge "Gas Storage Factory" project.
Gas Compressor Overview
- DTI requests that a Gas Compressor Station be built approximately mid way between two existing
facilities (Chambersburg, PA and Leesburg, VA) to increase pressure in the gas pipeline during
certain peak hours of need. The customers of the gas do not live in the immediate area, but rather in
northern Virginia. The gas pipeline happens to run through Middletown Valley and was built in the
early 1970's. Initially, DTI picked a site off of Marker Rd. west of Middletown. The citizens of
Middletown protested loudly and with good reasons. They also pressed the issue that alternative
industrial sites would be more appropriate. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
agreed that alternative sites should be looked at. In this process of looking at alternative sites, the
Jefferson site was chosen by Dominion.
